Internships and Classes in London
The main orientation for all students takes place during the first few days the program. Orientation includes informational, cultural, and social activities to acquaint students with each other and with life and business culture in London. All aspects of the program are covered in detail during these meetings. In addition, students will attend orientation sessions at the University of Westminster as well. Internships and classes begin after orientation.
Unpaid, Academic Work-Placements
EPA has developed a strong network of placements across many industries. All students work at their internships for 20 hours per week. EPA is proud to be among the first providers of internships with Members of the House of Commons, and we also offer placements with cultural, theatrical, business and health organizations. We are always expanding our offerings, and we pride ourselves on our personalized approach.
London is one of the world’s most important business and financial markets. While internships with large financial institutions are more difficult to come by, EPA still has quality internships with smaller credit unions and coops. Interns learn the work of the different departments and take on a project for the term. These projects may then presented to the Board of Directors upon completion. Opportunities not afforded at larger institutions.
Healthcare Administration Internships
The British National Health Service provides American students with an excellent opportunity to examine a nationalized system of health care delivery. An international internship presents an unrivaled opportunity to explore its practical possibilities, challenges, benefits, and problems. Internships provide work experiences in hospital administration and health organizations promoting health and nutrition education. Due to strict privacy regulations, one-one-one patient care is normally not available.
Marketing/Public Relations Internships
Internships are available in marketing departments for businesses as well as advertising/PR firms. Students with good writing skills have written social media and blog posts. Others have helped with photography, filming, and interviewing for video posts as well. Any skills or experience related to these should be listed in your resume.
Medical Research Internships
Internships with research laboratories or teaching hospitals are very competitive. Participants should already have some research experience shown in their resume.
Museum internships offer extraordinary opportunities to work as research and administrative assistants: preparing, mounting, and researching the history and background of objects; recording and cataloguing; as well as designing educational materials, leading school tours and planning and promoting exhibits for arts festivals. A detailed knowledge or experience in a specific field should be noted in the cover letter.
Political Science/International Relations Internships
Working in the House of Commons for a Member of British Parliament provides for an extraordinary immersion into the heart of British politics. Parliamentary interns are engaged in research, correspondence, and constituency case work. Students research local, national, and international issues, and write reports, press releases, subject briefs, and speeches. Those in constituency offices correspond with local constituents through email, letters, and at one-one-one meetings with constituents called, “surgeries”.
These opportunities provide psychology majors exposure and level of experience not normally afforded to undergraduates in the United States. The placements can be research-oriented or a combination of research and clinical.
London is the center of a dramatic tradition and excellence that started with Shakespeare and continues to thrive today, making it the unrivaled theater capital of the world. London “Fringe” theaters are comparable to smaller, off-Broadway theaters in the United States, and these offer students the opportunity to work as general assistants and participate in all aspects of theatrical production, from publicity and box office work to lighting design, stage management, and assisting directors and producers. Acting internships are not available.
In London students attend the University of Westminster, a British University with a global focus and over 5,000 international students. They choose two level 5 or 6 course modules from over 700 offered. Full details can be found by visiting the University of Westminster’s website. Three of the Westminster’s four campuses are within walking distance from the EPA flats, and the Harrow campus is just a train ride away.

During the summer, all students take one class together on British Culture & Politics to satisfy UK Tier 4 Visa regulations. The class includes field trips to various locations, and students complete a project and presentation. Because of the visa regulations, all students must attend whether or not they seek credit for the course. Students intern 20 hours per week – just like during the spring and autumn semesters.
