Affiliated Students
If you are from an institution affiliated to EPA, your home institution will
decide if you are accepted into the program. They will send your documents
on to EPA’s US office and from there, they will be forwarded to the
relevant program center. You will remain registered at your home institution
and receive academic credit from your home institution upon successful
completion of the program.
Independent Students
If you can arrange to receive credit from your own home institution, or you
are not seeking academic credit, or you attend an institution outside the
United States, then you should contact:

Acceptance for Independent
Students
As soon as EPA’s admissions office receives your completed application,
including all references and a transcript, it will be reviewed. You will
be notified by letter, generally within three weeks, of your acceptance to
the program if all documents are in order. Shortly there-after, EPA’s
US Office will contact you regarding program payment and other associated
program and administrative issues. At this time students are expected to
submit a $300 non-refundable deposit to secure their place on the program.
Transfer Credit Students
If you need academic credit but cannot obtain it from your home institution,
you can apply to the University of Rochester for most of the internship
fields in London, Edinburgh, Brussels, Madrid, Bonn, Cologne and Berlin.
Exceptions include these internship fields: Social Science, Urban Studies
and Town Planning, and Education. For these fields you can apply to Northern
Illinois University (NIU). Your application will be reviewed by the
pertinent institution (University of Rochester or NIU) and that university
will determine your eligibility for the program.

Passports and Visas
You must have a passport valid for the duration of your stay abroad. Processing times for U.S. Passports have increased dramatically since 2007 due to increased volume. It may take three months or more to get your passport, even if you’re just renewing an existing passport. Don’t delay—start the process of applying for or renewing your passport at the same time you begin researching and applying for your study abroad program.
Most European countries now require visas for anyone, US citizens or otherwise, who plan to enter and remain in their countries for the purposes of study. Currently, visas are required for all students on the Brussels and Madrid programs, and Prior Entry Clearance is required for all students on the London and Edinburgh programs, but visa requirements can change without notice. Click here for more detailed instructions and links to helpful websites.
Applying for a visa or Prior Entry Clearance is a lengthy process. We highly encourage all students to begin the process as early as possible.
